New Beginnings

Well here we are. The start of my senior year at Ferris State University. I have neglected this blog all year even though my last post was about blogging more. Too bad life catches up with us. I have a few new projects I wanna start this year. First off I want to finally take that big step and start a fashion blog. I love reading them and I watch Youtube beauty videos religiously. It's something I have always wanted to try and as soon as I set it up I will post it to this blog. As a senior there are many daunting things we face as we leave the safety of our school years behind and stepping out into the real world. I want this blog to reflect those changes and follow my last year in my safety blanket that is college. Promise to post soon and I can't wait to Start my fashion blog!

Blogging more.

One of my goal for 2012 is to Blog more. I created this blog with a purpose and now I need to utilize it. My second semester of junior year has started and I am already busy. Not only am I taking 15 credits, I also am very involved in three campus organizations. I am in an organization called Entertainment Unlimited which is the campus programming board, I am a founder of the Student Fashion Alliance, and I am an active member of the Public Relations Society of America. Although I am busy I love what I do. I love always having something to do and being involved with so much.

Now that it's winter and cold out side I have more time for indoor activities, such as BLOGGING! I really want to start a make-up and fashion blog soon as well. I just need the motivation to get it started. Hopefully that will happen soon. Look for more posts and maybe a new blog!

Being Professional

Most of us should already know you should always be professional no matter what work situation you are in. as some of you know I currently work at The Department of Public Safety. While at work a women came in furious over a ten dollar parking ticket I issued her. From the moment she came in she yelled and was rude. I tried to explain to her why she got the ticket and she refused to listen. I thought that was the end of it, until I happen to jump on my dads Facebook page to show a friend a picture of my horses and noticed my dad comment on the following status.

"I'm sorry to say but the downtown has lost my business for a while. Due to the way others were parked, I parked the way they were and I got a ticket, of course Dept. of Public Safety assured me they ticketed everyone else, too. Too bad because I spent over $150 there today. :-("

Now this alone is not that bad, but she then went on to say the following.

"But what ticked me off the most was when I went down to DPS, I had taken a pic off the person in front of me how they parked and they had no ticket. The girl there snickered, looked at the picture and said"yea! That was me I just did that and all three of u got tickets" with a big smile, proud as a peacock was she. Must've taken lessons from Fat Cop."
None of what she said is true. Now you may what this has to do with professionalism. This women happen to be friends with my dad who did not know the status at was about me but did not take to kindly to the "fat cop" reference due to the fact he is a retired police officer. Now that he does also know this status was about his daughter, and knows the real story, needles to say she has burned a bridge with my father who has helped her out in the past.

What we say online and how we act may have more effect on us than we know. Im sure this women's behavior would have been completely different had she known the family connection. This reinforces that we must act professional no matter the situation we are put in because you never know who knows who and how fast word will travel. This women also made a statement about taking it to court and most likely winning because I wont even show up. To that I say good luck and see you there.

Spring Break Stress

I woke up on Sunday morning in fairly good mood. I made some coffee and settled in to watch some Doctor Who flip on my laptop and do some writing. When I turned my laptop on I discovered something terrible. The clicker on my mouse pad refused to work! I sat there clicking it over and over again hoping it would start doing its job, after about 20 minutes I gave up. Having to work all day monday it was impossible to go to the one computer store Big Rapids has. Finally I was able to stop in before another long day at work on Tuesday. After waiting in line behind an older women learning to use Microsoft Word I finally got a chance to tell the man working at the computer store my horrible problem. He then informed me he could not fix it, but he knew what was wrong. Basically my mouse clicker wore out and I need a new one. Then he informed me in order to go that I needed to replace the whole top part of my laptop..... Something that would cost me a couple hundred bucks. Being the broke college student that I am I found an alternative to this high number, I bought a wireless mouse... When I told the computer store man my plan he said that was a solution to the problem but not a fix. Looks like this summer Im going to have to swallow my cheap pride and pay for the repairs. What a way to start spring break stuck in Big Rapids.

Michigan Blogger Meet-up

Yesterday Alex, Sam, and I went to the Michigan Blogger Meet-up in Grand Rapids. There are so many words to describe the event. A few being awesome, amazing, and incredible. I met so many wonderful people and look forward to the next time we have a meet-up. Being new to blogging I was not quite sure what to expect and was a little nervous since all the others in attendance have been doing it for a long time. My worries were smashed instantly. Everyone was so friendly and fun. It made me want to be more involved with my blog and other bloggers. I would like to give a big THANK YOU to Tieka of Selective Potential for putting the event together and for the amazing goodie bags. The event itself was also loads of fun. After the Aqua Lush fashion show we went to the Monkey Lounge in the BOB for drinks, and by drinks I mean diet Pepsi because this blogger is only 3 days away from being 20, which also meant we had to leave at 10 because Alex, Sam, and I are all minors and the BOB has an age limit after 10pm. Overall it was an amazing experience and I can't wait to do it again as soon as possible.

Accepting Twitter into my life.

For those of you that know me, you may know I have never been a huge fan of Twitter. In fact I didn't even have a Twitter until I switch programs. It was then I realized the importance of Twitter in modern social media with a little help from my good friend and fellow PR major, Alex Lorenz, I finally got one. For the longest time she would stress to me the benefits of the website, but being the stubborn person I am I did not listen. To me Twitter was simply a place people posted meaningless updates I really don't care about. This opinion changed when Alex got an internship via Twitter, you can read about that on her blog  http://brunettecurlsanddiscountpearls.blogspot.com/. I finally broke down and made an account after that. I have now realized its all about who you follow. Along with my classmates, Sith Lords, and He who must not be named I follow many PR professionals and people who help you get internships. This has been a great help to me. I still find that there is a down side to Twitter, but my views have changed a lot since realizing the sites full potential. I recommend you all join if you don't already have an account and happy Tweeting!

Changing Majors

Some people know recently I changed my major from Music Industry Management to Public Relations. This is something I had been thinking about doing for a very long time. Although I learned a lot from the MIM program it was not quite the right fit for me. After taking the required public relation class for MIM I knew what I wanted to do. I was just worried about falling behind and not being able to catch up, but after a meeting with the PR advisor I realized I could do it with a little extra work. Hence my load of summer classes. Along with summer classes I will be working full time. I am also looking into a short internship at the end of summer in New York with Sephora which would be amazing. My summer is going to be anything but a break, but it will be worth it in the end.
